Independent Walking Holidays in the Mercantour, France - Walking in the Area

Self guided walk to the Col des ChampsAn organised walk in the Cirque de l’Encombrette Walking high in the Mercantour National Park

Self-Guided Walks

You could choose to introduce yourself to the region with some short strolls: to a mountain chapel and spectacular viewpoint, around the remarkable village of Péone, into the dramatic Daluis Gorge, or through aromatic woods and alpine meadows. You may decide to try some medium length (half-day) walks, discovering remote chapels, ancient alpine hamlets and abandoned farms, or an old water-mill in a hidden valley, where you can picnic and paddle by the stream. And there are full-day walks for you to choose in the Handbook, crossing high passes, discovering impressive waterfalls, admiring breath-taking views, and maybe spotting a chamois or a marmot. Just decide how you feel each day – and pick a walk to match!

Organised Walks

(not available on  No-Frills Hosted Escapes)

If you join the three organised walks per week included on our Original Escapes, you might find yourself exploring the huge and isolated cirque of ‘L’Encombrette’, with its two blue lakes, or the wild lavender meadows that cover the higher reaches of the Tête de la Colombière (2,050m). You could also find yourself strolling gently in the alpine meadows of the high Var valley, or heading for the summit of Mont Pelat (3,050m), with views stretching on a clear day to Corsica and into the high Alps.
