Original Car-Free Escape in the Highlands, Gran Canaria

The path to Roque BentaigaThe Highlands of Gran Canaria

While most of our Escapes include a hire car to allow you to explore the region fully, you may prefer a holiday without the need to drive.  On a 7-night Original Car-Free scheduled departure in Gran Canaria, we replace your hire car with designated airport transfers and some local group transfers too, so there is no need to drive yourself.  Stay in the delightful little town of Tejeda, set amongst stunning scenery. Within walking distance of your B&B you will find shops, bars and restaurants, many with terraces overlooking the mighty Tejeda ravine, and a number of tiny museums (with erratic opening hours!).

Many of our favourite walks can be enjoyed on a Car-Free holiday in Gran Canaria, although the range of walks and activities available is inevitably not as broad as if you had your own hire-car to explore independently, so if you are keen to experience a particular walk or visit, please check whether this will be possible at time of booking.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1 – Saturday   Transfer from Las Palmas airport

Day 2 – Sunday  Your first organised walk explores the lush Mina Valley with its waterfall and upland pastures (6 miles, ↑↓ 430m).  Or head out on a short self-guided walk into the great Tejeda Ravine.

Day 3 – Monday  Take a self-guided walk through forests of Canarian Pine to the monolith of Roque Nublo and the pretty village of La Culata (5.3 miles, ↑↓ 530m).  Or you might relax at your hotel, and enjoy Tejeda’s cafés, and shops.

Day 4 – Tuesday  Set out from the attractive town of Valleseco to explore the tranquil north of the island on today’s organised walk (9.5 miles, ↑825m /↓ 550m).  Or choose a self-guided walk from Tejeda, maybe circuiting beneath Roque Nublo to La Culata.

Day 5 – Wednesday  Today’s self-guided walk follows a pilgrim path to the Acusa Plateau and visits the aboriginal caves of Acusa Seca (9.3 miles, ↑↓ 520m). Or spend the day in Tejeda and maybe visit a museum or two.

Day 6 – Thursday   Your last organised walk takes you from the highest point on the island along the amazing central ridge, with stunning views (9.1 miles, ↑ 200 / ↓ 1000m). Or guide yourself on a walk up to the Cruz de Tejeda.

Day 7 – Friday   Take a final self-guided walk around the rim of the Caldera de Gáldar and then to Artenara to explore the many cave-villages in the area (9.4 miles, ↑450 /↓ 850m).  Alternatively, explore the cave-houses and famous cave-church in Artenara.

Accommodation

We stay for 7 nights in the stylish Fonda de la Tea B&B in Tejeda, within easy walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants.   The traditionally decorated en-suite rooms lead off a typical Canarian patio with lovely views down the Tejeda ravine.  The terrace faces west and so enjoys amazing sunsets as the sun sinks behind Tenerife.  More of a guest-house than a hotel, this attractive property is built around a sensitively converted fonda (inn) with an intimate and unpretentious breakfast room.  The lounge is open until around 8pm, and is a comfortable spot to curl up with a book before dinner.
