You may wish to spend leisurely afternoons on short self-guided walks, whether to lie on a sun-warmed rock on a meadow promontory with epic views, wandering through upland pastures, exploring the stepped alleys and tiny lanes of medieval Caramanico, or paddling in the Orta. Instead you might choose some medium length (half-day) walks into the dramatic Orfento Gorge, discovering the beech-woods and wildflower meadows of Lama Bianca, or aiming to picnic and paddle at the amazing water-carved rocks of the Orta. On one or two days you might embark on a full day excursion, heading deeper into the Orfento Gorge, or to discover the secluded cliff-sanctuaries of San Bartolomeo or San Giovanni, last refuge of Pope Celestine V. Choose to walk just as much or as little as you like, or spend the day reading, relaxing and taking in the views.
Even on our Original Car-Free Escapes you can enjoy a choice of self-guided walks which can be done independently, should any day’s planned activities not appeal.
If you choose to join the 3 organised walks per week included on our
Original and Original Car-Free Escapes, you could also find yourself exploring a Romanesque church and a ruined castle; stepping through patches of snow in high summer in the rocky cirque of Le Murelle, or standing on the grassy summit of Monte Morrone.
