The Julian Alps While most of our Escapes include a hire car to allow you to explore the region fully, you may prefer a holiday without the need to drive. On a 7-night Original Car-Free scheduled departure in the Julian Alps, we replace your hire car with designated airport transfers and some local group transfers too, so there is no need to drive yourself. Stay in your own self-catering apartment in the charming little town of Kobarid. Within walking distance you will find shops, cafes and restaurants, an award-winning museum dedicated to WW1, white water activities on the Soča river, fishing and cycling.
Many of our favourite walks can be enjoyed on a Car-Free holiday in the Julian Alps, although the range of walks and activities available is inevitably not as broad as if you had your own hire-car to explore independently, so if you are keen to experience a particular walk or visit, please check whether this will be possible at time of booking.
Day 1 – Sunday Transfer from Ljubljana airport.
Day 2 –Monday Join an organised walk through villages, woods and pastures to the church of Sveti Lovrenc, burial place of Slovenia’s greatest poet. (7.1 miles) (↑↓ 500m). Or head out on a self-guided walk – a historical circuit of Kobarid and along the Soča River.
Day 3 –Tuesday Today, take a self-guided walk across the lovely Drežnica plateau (5.3 miles, ↑↓ 300m) and/or visit the frescoed chapel of Sveti Just and some spectacular woodland waterfalls (2 miles, ↑↓ 150m). Or relax in Kobarid, and visit the fascinating WW1 museum.
Day 4 –Wednesday Join an organised walk climbing to a spur of the Krn massif, to enjoy magnificent views (6.6 miles, ↑↓ 520m). Or choose another self-guided walk through the charming villages of Svino and Suzid.
Day 5 –Thursday Today’s self-guided walk takes you to the meadow summit of Mt Matajur, on the border with Italy, then descends through wonderful beech woods (8.4 miles, ↑↓ 850m). Or you might relax at your hotel, and enjoy Kobarid’s cafés and shops.
Day 6 –Friday Your last organised walk takes you to the crest of Krasji Vrh and some extensive ruins of Italian WW1 fortifications (9.2 miles, ↑↓ 1030m). Or enjoy another self-guided walk to the village of Magozd and the dramatic Kozjak waterfall.
Day 7 –Saturday Take it easy today on a final self-guided walk to the gentle river Nadiža where you can picnic and paddle at your leisure (2+ miles, ↑↓ 20m).
Day 8 – Sunday Transfer to Ljubljana airport.
We stay for 7 nights in comfortable self-catering apartments in the centre of Kobarid, within easy walking distance of shops, bars and restaurants. Each apartment has its own kitchen and a balcony on which to sit out in the evenings and watch the world go by. Your apartment will be serviced every other day, and you will find your kitchen stocked with a selection of food for breakfast – all you have to do is help yourself.
On Original Car-Free Escapes, we will provide airport transfers to coincide with a designated flight arrival and departure. Those wishing to travel on different flights should meet at the airport at the ETA of the designated flight to join the transfer or alternatively a private transfer can be arranged at additional cost. On the last day of the tour, the transfer will arrive at the airport some 2 hours before the departure of the designated flight.
