Independent Walking Holidays in the Julian Alps, Slovenia - Food & Drink

Eating & Drinking

Picnic Lunches
On an Original or Original Car-Free Escape, your Upland Manager will provide you with a healthy, varied and nutritionally balanced deli-style packed-lunch, freshly made every day.

A wide selection of locally produced and often organic fruits and vegetables, meats and cheeses, bread, grains and pulses will be used, giving you the opportunity to really savour the flavours of the Julian Alps.  Try cured ham and sausages, strong skuta cheese, delicious salads of seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit and home-baked pastries.

If you have chosen a No-Frills Hosted Escape, you will find a wide choice of delicious picnic ingredients available to buy in Kobarid’s shops.

Evening Meals

There are a number of excellent restaurants in and around the town of Kobarid, including the elegant Hiša Franko and the Topli Val, which some have rated among the best restaurants in Slovenia. For simpler fare, the little inn at Drežnica serves good gnocchi, and if you are on an Original Escape, your hosts Irena & Urška Kranjc will serve delicious home-grown dishes including lamb, home-made cheese and seasonal vegetables from their garden.

Regional cuisine includes Soča trout (postrv), excellent beef, venison, a strong mountain curd cheese (skuta) and delicious cured ham and sausages. Bread (kruh) is always very good, soup (juha) is always freshly made, and puddings are often rich and calorific, but also feature pancakes (mlinci), ice-cream (sladoled) and seasonal nuts and berries. Beer (pivo) is excellent, and there are some very good red wines from the nearby Brda Hills and Vipava Valley, as well as light whites from the Primorska Coast and Eastern Slovenia.
